Section breaks can be used to divide your document into sections, and you can apply formatting to specific blocks of text using the Microsoft Word formatting tool. For example, you can have different margin sizes in different sections, different headers and footers in different sections, and so forth. Section breaks are distinct from page breaks, which move the content that follows a page break to the beginning of the next page after the page break.

When you remove a section break, the text before and after the break is combined into a single section that inherits the formatting of the section that was previously deleted.
Remove One Or More Section Breaks In A Microsoft Word Document
A single section break or multiple section breaks can be removed from a document in Microsoft Word in a number of different ways. You’ll need to display paragraph marks or symbols in order to remove section breaks from your document. It is possible that you will have to select and delete section breaks in a different view because they are difficult to delete. Section breaks should be deleted with caution because each section can have its own set of margins, headers and footers, and page orientation, and deleting a section break could cause all of those settings to be altered.

Section breaks can be viewed in either the Print Layout View (which is the default view in Word) or the Draft View. If you want to remove section breaks, it’s best to turn on paragraph marks (and other non-printing characters) in either case.
In order to see section breaks, paragraph marks, and other non-printing characters in Microsoft Word, type the following commands:
- In the Ribbon, select the Home tab and then click OK.
- In the Paragraph group, select Show/Hide from the drop-down menu. Printing will not be possible with paragraph marks, tabs, spacing, and manual page breaks in place.
You can switch between Page Layout View and Draft View by selecting the View tab in the Ribbon and then selecting the appropriate view from the list.
Ensure That Track Changes Is Turned off.
When Track Changes is enabled, you will be unable to delete section breaks. To turn off Track Changes, follow these steps:
- From the Ribbon, select the Review tab. 2.
- In the Tracking group, select Track Changes and then click OK.
Turn off tracking by selecting Track Changes from the drop-down menu in step three. Track Changes can also be turned off by pressing Ctrl + Shift + E on your keyboard.

Removing A Section Break
By default, page breaks between sections are not visible. Turn on Show/Hide Section Breaks if you want to quickly remove a section break. To remove a break, type the following:
- If necessary, select the Home tab and then Show/Hide in the Paragraph group from the drop-down menu.
- Select the break by double-clicking it or dragging it over it.
- To remove the brake, press Backspace or Delete on your keyboard.
If you are having trouble deleting a section break, select Draft from the Views group on the Ribbon by clicking the View tab in the Ribbon. By dragging over the break, you can select it and then press Delete. Return to the Print Layout View by selecting the View tab once more and then selecting Print Layout from the Views group once more.
